Weaning...it's Complete

It's over.  Basically.  The little calves are on their own and not-so-sad anymore.  And those mommas are not crying over the "cold-turkey" weaning these days.  Instead, they're eating up in order to provide for the new little ones already inside.

Jeremy (and my parents) still gather the little guys daily to check on them and give shots ("doctor") to those who are sick.

But, then they're turned out, on their own, to pastures away from the cows.

For a few more weeks, they'll be brought in to be checked daily, and then some will be delivered to new owners and others will remain to expand our stock of cows eventually.  It's just part of the cycle for us and them.  In four short months, we'll have babies on the ground and it will begin again.  Until then, we're gearing up for a cold winter of feeding!

  1. I love reading your posts on life on the ranch. It's so different than the life that I've known, and it makes it that much more interesting!! Thank you so much for sharing! :)

  2. I feel the same way... reading about the ranch is so fascinating to me! I actually got teary eyed in your post about the babies being separated and told the husband all about it. Keep them coming!
