Five Favorites...

Linking up with Hallie for...

Five of my favorite things about life on the ranch:

1.  Unadulterated views of Creation.

If you can't be at peace out here with sunsets like this, reminding you that it all comes from Him, where can you?

2.  New Life

From puppies, to baby calves and colts, ranching gives you an up-close-and-personal view of the fragility of  life...and how miraculous each birth is.  These animals, like humans, need care.  If the weather isn't quite right for birth, if they are not positioned correctly, if their moms haven't had the right nutrients, etc, things can be tragic.  While I am a much bigger lover of human life than I am animal life, going to check the cows almost daily to make sure none need assistance in birthing, I am constantly reminded that every.single.life. is precious.

3.  Working as a family.

While I'm sure some of you are leaving as readers of the blog after this, all I can say is that animals don't get better care than they do as part of a ranch.  We vaccinate them to prevent illnesses and death, medicate them when they're sick.  Supplement their food intake when a lack of rain leaves less grass than they need.  Brand them so if lost they can be found.  Pull calves when the mamas can't have them on their own, and make a living caring for them every day.

Plus, we get to do it together.  My immediate family, and part of my extended.  The little guys even get their fill...

4.  Seeing this man every morning, noon and night and being able to prepare his meals...

and stay home with these boys...

 I am blessed beyond belief.

5.  Living simply.

While I love a trip to the city, its pace and its conveniences, had the best year living in DC and subscribing to every little bit of city life, and do my fair share of online shopping/trend-watching, I am happiest with my kiddos in our little nest with views like these.

  1. I am so jealous. I'd love to have a family farm or ranch, where we could all work together every day.

    1. You're right, it isn't for everyone! But, I have a feeling everyone can find simple joys in their lifestyles too :) Seems like a daily struggle to simplify, doesn't it??

  5. Britt - I TOTALLY LOVE your photos! And if anyone is offended by the thought of humans having dominion over and TENDING animals, well....they've got some stuff to work through with God. Meanwhile, keep those photos coming - it nourishes my heart just to look at them!

  8. This is all so beautiful and cool! And totally foreign to me - my husband and I have always talked about just starting a farm and raising animals, but there's no way we could do it with our suburban upbringing :P
