A Pasture Cookout with Friends

I would tell you how fast the summer has passed, but I'm sure it is the same for almost everyone.  So, instead, here's a peek at what we've been doing...

The first week of June, we had the best time with some of the most amazing people.  Brandon and Kathleen Vogt (Brandon works with my sister and brother-in-law at Word on Fire) were making a cross-country trip from FL to CA, and we got to be a stop on their way back home!  Having just briefly met Brandon and Kathleen three years earlier at my sister's wedding, we knew little of each other, but that changed quickly!

They have five kiddos, who almost match up with our oldest five, so we were in for a fun adventure! They helped us celebrate Sophie's 3rd birthday.  We had a day of water games, fishing and just being together.  And, we began it all with a little cookout.

Carter quickly latched onto Teresa, as she was his age.

The first evening was just with the girls and us as their boys were a little under the weather.  We had hot dogs, hamburgers and more than one s'more!

I might have pushed the s'mores because they're one of my favorite things...but I don't think the kiddos minded.

If you haven't tried one with a Reeses cup instead of a piece of plain chocolate, do so!

John Paul calls the perfectly roasted marshmallow the moon mallow - as he thinks it might look like the surface of the moon?  I know, I know.  Genius.

While the kids played, the parents visited between tending to everyone, and I cannot say what a blessing it was...to be in the company of new friends whose faith and life is an inspiration.  To be with those whose family is as big as your own, who appreciate the craziness and beauty of it all...who help you see that each little piece of this life (be it joy or suffering) is part of our journey toward Him. It was a blessing indeed!

So, the summer began with a cookout and probably will end with one...with lots of fun in between.
