The Beauty in the Everyday

I took these photos a month or so ago for a different project and forgot to ever post them here.  They tell the story of some of our chores.  So, the thought of doing chores seems so mundane to most, but I've since realized that what may seem ordinary for us is far less for others.  And, in realizing that, I've also realized how much I take for granted the beauty we're surrounded by...mainly in the form of animals and the simplicity of His creation.  So, here we are doing a bit of our daily grind...sometimes with and sometimes without the kids.  On this particular evening, they helped with it all.

John Paul got stuck in the fence.
 We fed the chickens.

On our way to feed the cows in the pasture...

Checking the windmill.

How cool is it that they turned to look at me at the same time?!

Finally, loading hay for the next day.

And, there you have it!  The evening's work.

We are in a place both literally and figuratively that is sometimes a bit crazy and even juxtaposed. We live in a place surrounded by no noise minus the distant hum of a train or the cows bellowing for their babies, yet there is almost never a moment of silence inside.  We don't have many distractions in the form of stores or restaurants or even activities, yet I constantly feel distracted from one daily task to the next.  I yearn for a home and life that is peaceful, a place where our children can feel safe, yet in these young years, it can often feel a bit chaotic.

Even with the daily frustrations and the constantly wanting to be more, I wouldn't want to be any other place.  In living or in life.  I don't always give the best example of being joyful in the day-to-day.  I'm often a bit too wrapped around the axel to do so.  But, I was reminded this week that I'm exactly where I need to be...on a ranch, in a home with six little ones who need my attention almost every minute...in being a mom.  It won't be peaceful on the outside often.  But, in the inside, yes. Because of the choice to make it so.

Anything Guys Can Do...

...Sophie can, too.

Not really, but she loves doing almost anything her brothers do, especially when it involves her Daddy!

We got this neat little hammer and nail set for Christmas, and it's been a great way to learn shapes, colors and a bit of fine motor skills.

I'm not one to think boys and girls should be the same.  I don't think toys and clothing should all become gender neutral.  I feel like there are two genders for a reason and that each is uniquely beautiful in what it can only do.

That being said, I love that Sophie has interest in problem solving and doing things with tools.  She has great examples in her older brothers and her daddy.  I want for this little girl to be able to think her way out of problems and work hard to do everything she is capable of...even if it is with her baby doll in hand!

John Paul-y Turns Four

On the 8th, John Paul turned four.  BUT, he told everyone who asked that he was still three...until he blew out the candles on the cake that evening.
The candles on the monkey bread were just a trial run.

And, he topped it off with his current favorite...hot chocolate.
Right alongside Miss Bedhead.
And, the one who may have dumped half a box of Rice Krispies on the floor.
John Paul was born on the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, so we're always treated to Mass on his birthday.  After naps, we had a little party with a few things I thought were a bit John Paul-ish: fedoras, crazy teeth, funny glasses and mustaches.
Plus, he wanted the favorite around here...strawberry cake.

Rarely is this kiddo unhappy...or too serious.

In fact, when I wasn't looking, I saw him get a second (huge!) piece of cake right out of the middle like it was no big deal.  Yes, I let him eat it.

Then came the mug shots...

John Paul was too busy, and this one was wasn't too happy.

But, he had a great birthday!  When you're four, that birthday can be made a little sour by a well-check with three shots.  Jeremy had to take him this time, and when I asked how it went, the conversation went something like this:

Me: Well, how did it go?
Jeremy: It's a little tough to take the pants off of a kid who is screaming and running in place.
John Paul: And, you have to watch out or you might get your finger bit!
Me: John Paul, did you bite Daddy?
John Paul: Nah, I just scratched him this time.

I died laughing.

John Paul is our firecracker.  He...
...loves to make others laugh.
...takes the best care of his little siblings, and claims this next one is all his.
...has a sensitive little soul.
...seems to never get tired.
...is in the 50th percentile for height and 75th for weight for his age.
...weighs 38 pounds.
...loves to help out.
...is rarely quiet.
...has the cutest little chuckle.
...loves the color blue, bubble gum, his giraffe blanket and "just one more piece" of candy.
...runs like the wind.
...brightens any room.
...and is sheer joy.

Happy birthday, sweet boy.
